Which movie star do you want to be?

In recent posts, I’ve written about celebrity and how important and pervasive it’s become in our culture. As is sometimes the case, I heard something short and funny that says more about celebrity in a few words than I could manage in many paragraphs. It comes from one of my favorite TV programs, The Vicar of Dibley, a Brit com that’s been around for many years.

A film crew has come to town to make a video of the town’s church and its new female vicar.  Afterwards, Hugo, who is in love with the verger, Alice, says to her: “By next week you may be a movie star.”

Her answer is perfect: “Yes… I wonder which one.”

I am forever writing the great American novel, practicing the piano (in hopes of joining an amateur string quartet someday), gardening, and now, since I've gotten old when I wasn't looking, trying to figure out what that means.
