In recent posts, I’ve written about celebrity and how important and pervasive it’s become in our culture. As is sometimes the case, I heard something short and funny that says more about celebrity in a few words than I could manage in many paragraphs. It comes from one of my favorite TV programs, The Vicar of Dibley, a Brit com that’s been around for many years.
A film crew has come to town to make a video of the town’s church and its new female vicar. Afterwards, Hugo, who is in love with the verger, Alice, says to her: “By next week you may be a movie star.”
Her answer is perfect: “Yes… I wonder which one.”
